What Good Does Soaking Dentures Really Do?
Posted on 11/9/2020 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
What Good Does Soaking Dentures Really Do?As prosthodontic professionals, we insist that patients soak their dentures for the best results in care and stability. Soaking your dentures overnight maintains the integrity of your dentures and also gives your gums a rest. The following information gives you more details about why soaking your dentures is important to you orally and psychologically.

What are the Main Advantages Associated with Denture Cleansing or Soaking?

While you may look at your dentures and think they look sturdy and solid, their base is usually made of an acrylic. Acrylic is full of tiny pores – too small to be seen visually. However, these small holes attract germs and bacteria. If you don't clean or soak your dentures, these bacteria can have a profound effect on your gum health. Moreover, bacteria in the mouth increase as people age, all which leads to an increased chance of infection. Both your dentures and the ingestion of certain medications can impair saliva flow. Moreover, you should give your soft and tender gums a overnight rest, which makes soaking imperative.

Why Soaking is Highly Effective

When you brush your dentures, you will not penetrate the pores of the acrylic base. As a result, you won't fully get rid of the buildup of bacteria that causes gum disease. However, an overnight soak will keep 99.9% of the bacteria under control while keeping your mouth healthy and dentures odor-free. Always use a commercial denture cleanser to ensure the best results.

If you don't like the process of soaking removable dentures, you may want to consider fixed dentures instead. In either case, we can answer your questions so you can choose the best prosthodontic solution for you. In the interim, if you must take care of removable dentures, make sure you soak them nightly. Doing so will prolong the use of your dentures and will ensure better gum health.
