What Can You do to Help Dental Crowns Last Longer?
Posted on 8/10/2020 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
Dental crowns protect cracked or chipped teeth by covering the damaged tooth in a protective casing molded to fit your tooth precisely. Crowns are typically made from either porcelain or metal (though metal crowns are usually used only for your back teeth, as the metal is more noticeable than porcelain). With a crown in place, you can go years without having to worry about the pain – and other problems – a damaged tooth can bring. But no crown can last forever.
How Long Do Crowns Last?
Crowns today last longer than ever, with new kinds of materials being used, such as porcelain-fused-to-metal and zirconia porcelain. Porcelain crowns typically last between five and fifteen years, and metal crowns might last twenty years or more, but even with these advances, crowns will eventually wear out. With the proper care, you can make them last as long as possible.
What To Do – and What Not To Do
Easy but effective ways to care for your crown include brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice daily, and making twice yearly visits with us so that our hygienists can thoroughly clean and rinse your teeth. Keeping your teeth and gums free from infection will go a long way to extending the life of your crown. Additionally, avoid grinding your teeth, don't chew ice, and don't use your teeth to open packaging (or bottles!). Sometimes, it is as much what you don't do as what you do that makes the difference between replacing a crown after fifteen years or replacing the crown after five years.
Being proactive can help you extend the life of your crown. Although modern crowns are longer-lasting and more resilient than ever, they will eventually need to be replaced. Make your crown last as long as possible. Call our office to learn more.
