Why Dentures Start Off Being Painful

Posted on 3/20/2020 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
Why Dentures Start Off Being PainfulDentures are a modern marvel of dentistry. A lot of work goes into creating a single pair of dentures so that the fit, shape, and style of them is right for every individual that has them.

Part of the reason this is possible is because of modern technology that allows us to make detailed molds of the oral cavity. Alongside the precision of making a denture, there are many options available to you including teeth shade, gum color, and tooth shape.

Even with all of these advances in denture technology, a common complaint when someone starts wearing them for the first time is that they can be painful. While dentures are fitted specifically for each individual, they can still cause mild stress to the gums and jaw. If it is the first couple of weeks that you have had dentures and they are painful, you might simply just need more practice and time wearing them. Over time, your mouth will be accustomed to the change, and you will be able to wear them all day long without pain. In the meantime, we can give you some tips to help the process.

How to Keep Dentures from Being Painful

The first tip to keep dentures from being painful is to wear them consistently. It is common for people to stop using their dentures once they make their mouth sore, but consistency is key. By wearing your dentures regularly, your mouth will become more accustomed to wearing them. Of course, you can take them out in the middle of the day, but try to wear them every day when possible.

Another tip is to make sure they stay clean. Dirty dentures can cause a lot of dental health problems, so it's important to make sure they are cleaned completely twice a day. If you have any more questions or would like more denture care tips, please call us.
