What Needs to Happen to Keep Your Crown Healthy?

Posted on 3/10/2020 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
What Needs to Happen to Keep Your Crown Healthy?Dental crowns have many different uses. People receiving a dental crown typically have one installed after a root canal, but in some cases, they are also installed for people who have suffered from severe tooth decay. Crowns can be made from a variety of different materials, but the materials used should last a long time if taken care of properly.

If you have a crown, you may be wondering if there is any special care you need to take to make sure it lasts a long time. They can be quite expensive after all! Not to mention that is takes quite a while to have one installed. Below, we've compiled a few steps you can take to make sure your crown last as long as possible.

Crown Care Tips

The material crowns are made of can sometimes be more fragile than your natural teeth. For this reason, it is important to only eat hard foods in moderation and to be careful when doing so. Some foods to avoid when trying to protect your crown are potato chips, hard candy, and ice. Ice can be particularly harmful to crowns because it is very hard.

Dental crowns should be taken care of like any of your other teeth. Make sure to brush and floss at least twice a day. Crowns are still vulnerable to decay even though they are made from a different material than your natural teeth. It is also important to come to our office once every six months for a cleaning.

Bacteria in your mouth can build up even when you brush and floss regularly. By coming to our office, we'll make sure your teeth are protected from bacteria and we'll even make sure that your crown is healthy. Give is a call if you would like a tooth cleaning today.
