What Reason Is there for Dentures to Soak?

What Reason Is there for Dentures to Soak?If you're new to dentures, you may wonder why we give you instructions on removing them at night and soaking them.

Dentures aren't like implants—they have specific care instructions that do differ from how you would care for natural teeth or implants. While it may be tempting to go a few nights without removing your dentures and soaking them, there are some major downsides to doing so.

Your Gums Need a Break

Wearing your dentures all day may not lead to noticeable irritation, but that's not always the case. This is especially true when you first start wearing dentures. You may actually need to take them out a few times during the day. Even after you've adjusted to wearing them, your gums still need a break from the constant pressure of dentures. Taking them out at night and letting them soak gives your mouth this relief.

Why Soak Dentures?

Some denture wearers wonder why they can't simply put their dentures on the bathroom counter instead of soaking them. First, this leaves the dentures out in the open where they can become covered with bacteria, especially if they're in the bathroom. Second, the dentures can dry out. Dentures have to be kept in water so they don't become dry and brittle. This also helps them keep their shape.

Depending on your dentures, you may need to use a denture cleanser solution. This actually cleans the dentures as they soak. If your dentures have metal wires, though, a soaking solution may tarnish them. Your dentures should never be soaked in hot water, no matter what they're made of—that can cause them to warp.

If you're new to dentures, we'll go over all of the care instructions with you. If you have any questions, you can always contact us.
