Do Your Gums Need Protection When You Are Not Wearing Your Dentures?

Posted on 12/10/2019 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
Do Your Gums Need Protection When You Are Not Wearing Your Dentures?Advances in denture technology have come a far way compared to the first dentures ever created. Today's dentures can be adjusted in size, shape, and tooth color so that they can fit comfortably in the mouth while still looking like real teeth.

They can be specifically fitted to your personal needs, but some people still experience problems with irritated gums when wearing their dentures for a long amount of time.

People who experience gum irritation while wearing dentures may want a break and may take them out for a cleaning. If you have ever done this, you may have been worried about your gums. Do you need to protect your gums when not wearing dentures? The answer to this question is yes, but it may not be the way you think you need to protect your gums.

How to Protect Your Gums

The gums are just as important as teeth. Your gums can be very sensitive, but they do protect your mouth. Sensitive nerves that are underneath the gums can become easily damaged and quite painful if they are disturbed. Because of this, it is necessary to maintain the good health of your gums.

When not wearing dentures, your gums are exposed to a lot more than they normally would be. As such, it is important to take extra care of them when your dentures are not in place. The biggest thing to avoid while not wearing your dentures is to avoid foods that could irritate them or cause them to be damaged. This includes hard, crunchy foods like potato chips. It is also wise to avoid extremely sugary foods like candy.

The sugar can attach itself to your gums and give the bacteria in your mouth more energy to grow. Since the gums can be quite sensitive, the bacteria can aggravate your gums more quickly than it would teeth. Give our office a call, and we'll answer any more questions you may have about gum care.
