Can You Have Both Dentures and Dental Implants?

Can You Have Both Dentures and Dental Implants? Both dentures and dental implants can improve your oral health, however, it is difficult to get them to work together in a way that is safe, comfortable, and convenient.

The process in which both of these things are either created or installed is vastly different, and to understand why they may not work well together, it is important to understand how each are implemented.

How Are They Made?
Dental implants are installed on a by tooth basis. They are usually implemented when tooth decay has destroyed a tooth and gum beyond repair. Because of the tooth decay, it is necessary to remove the damaged tooth and replace it with the dental implant. This way the patient can take better care of their mouth and not have to suffer from the pain of a decaying tooth.

The process for creating and acquiring dentures is much different than dental implants. The first step of creating dentures is for us to create an imprint of a patient's upper and lower gum. From that point, the imprint is cast to accurately replicate the mouth of the patient. Next, the patient then chooses a set of teeth that they like the color and feel of. After this process all the components are sent to a lab where the denture is assembled.

Since dentures are made uniquely for an individual, whether or not they will work with dental implants depends on the time both were implemented. It is not possible to use a set of dentures with dental implants if the dentures were made first, however, in some cases it may be possible to use both if dental implants were installed first. Dentures that work with dental implants are known as partial dentures, because they only contain some of the teeth leaving spaces in the mouth where dental implants can be implemented.

If you have complete denture and are looking to get dental implants, we can help you with a procedure known as full mouth treatment. If you are interested in pursuing this procedure, please give us a call at our office number and we can help you schedule an appointment.
