Can Leaving Your Dentures In Too Long Make You Sick?
Posted on 2/10/2019 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
Dentures are often a pain in the neck. They may not always fit perfectly, or they may get loose. You may or may not enjoy all the foods you want. While they are not perfect, they are a better option than not having any teeth at all. The key to having dentures that work properly is caring for them and your gums. Some people do not understand how to care for their dentures and leave them in for a long period of time. They may not realize the problems that this can create for their overall health. Caring for DenturesThe key to good oral health is the same whether you have dentures or have your natural teeth. Good oral hygiene plays a big role in the health of your teeth, your gums and the rest of your body. When you have dentures, you have to take extra steps in your oral health routine. The basics of brushing and flossing with dentures still apply. This can help remove the bacteria and debris found on the dentures, but it is not the only cleaning that dentures need. They also need soaking on a daily basis to fully clean them and remove the bacteria. This does not mean soaking them for five minutes. It is best to soak them over night. If you leave the dentures in too long, they do not get cleaned. How This Makes You Sick Some people will claim that the mouth is full of bacteria anyway and their immune system will take care of that bacteria. The problem is that bacteria in the mouth can eventually form plaque. That allows more bacteria to grow. Because there is a flow of blood to your gums, that means the bacteria that grow on the dentures can get into the blood stream. That bacteria can cause respiratory, cardiac and other health issues. It can make you feel miserable on a daily basis. It is a pain to care for dentures, but it is worth it. You do not want additional problems because you left your dentures in too long. Take the time to follow a daily routine to stay as healthy as possible. Contact our offices to schedule an appointment to find out about this or any other dental topic you want....
