How Dentures Differ from Full Dental implants

Posted on 7/10/2018 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
How Dentures Differ from Full Dental implantsIt is estimated that 7 out of 10 Americans between the ages of 35 and 44 have at least one missing tooth. If you are missing one or more teeth, two of the most common options available today are dentures and dental implants.

Both of them are viable options for filling the gaps left by a missing tooth and can restore your speech and allow you to eat food. However, the two differ in terms of cost, function and comfort.

Dentures

These are devices that are made of a removable plate that can be taken out and put back into the mouth. The two main types of dentures are full and partial. Full dentures have an acrylic base that is designed to fit around your gums. Partial dentures are fitted onto a metal clasp which is then attached to the anchor teeth.

There are dentures that can be fitted immediately the teeth are removed. However, conventional ones will require the gums to heal first after extraction. They also require getting used to in the first few weeks after they are fitted to replace missing teeth. One of the disadvantages is that ill-fitting dentures can have a negative impact on your oral and overall health.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a more permanent solution to missing teeth than dentures. These devices have a titanium post and a crown that resembles natural teeth. The post is made of titanium because the metal can fuse to the jawbone creating a very strong bond.

They are very useful and are not only used as teeth replacements, but also as support for dental bridges and dentures especially where multiple teeth are missing. The main disadvantage of implants is that they require healthy gums and are much more expensive compared to partial or full dentures. Would you like to learn more about dentures and dental implants?
