Q and A About Dental Implants

A diagram of how a dental implant works. If you are considering an investment in dental implants as a way to restore your smile after tooth loss, you may have some questions about the process. By answering some of the most common questions that dental patients have about implants, you can decide if this option is right for you.

How Long Will Your Implants Last?

Dental implants are a permanent solution to tooth loss, as the implant will fuse to your jawbone. If cared for properly, dental implants could last for life, as they are permanent parts of your mouth.

What Will I Feel during Surgery?

When you are getting dental implants, you will be placed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. After the sedative has taken effect, you shouldn't feel anything discomfort throughout the procedure, which can take as little as an hour for one implant or several hours if you are getting multiple implants or are replacing entire arches.

What is the Recovery Process Like?

After your anesthesia wears off, you can expect some discomfort, bleeding, and swelling, but your prosthodontist should be able to provide you with helpful tips on how to manage it. NSAIDs like ibuprofen are often recommended, but your doctor might also prescribe you a stronger pain killer if necessary.

You'll also need to be careful of what you eat for a while after the procedure. Stay hydrated, and stick to soft and nutritious foods while your mouth is healing. Your prosthodontist will give you dietary recommendations as well as instructions on how you can care for your implants throughout the healing process.

Are Implants Covered by Dental Insurance?

Most dental insurance providers consider implants to be elective, so they are often not covered by a dental insurance plan. If you are interested in this restorative option but are concerned about payment, contact our office about the possibility of setting up a payment plan.
