Are Your Dentures Giving You Bad Breath?

Posted on 3/27/2016 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
A pair of dentures floating inside a glass jar!Do you think now that you have dentures, you'll be less likely to experience bad breath? This is a common myth that many denture wearers believe when they first receive their appliance, and unfortunately, it just isn't true.

Similar to your natural teeth, your dentures will still be able to collect odor-causing bacteria and food particles, and gum disease and other oral health problems can also result in halitosis.

Ensure You Are Cleaning Your Dentures Thoroughly

One of the major causes of bad breath when wearing dentures is failing to properly clean your appliance. The space between your gums and your dentures is the ideal location for bacteria to grow and for food particles to get stuck, so it is important that you are removing your dentures to clean them after every meal. Make sure you are brushing both outside and inside, and if you wear adhesives, remove and replace them.

Don't Forget the Rest of Your Mouth
If you feel that you are doing a good job of cleaning your dentures, but still have bad breath, consider whether you are properly cleaning the rest of your mouth. You'll need to make sure that the gum tissue your dentures are resting on are cleaned either by brushing gently or wiping them down, and your tongue also needs a good scrubbing. Using a mouthwash can also help to kill bacteria.

Brushing Alone Might Not Do the Trick

Many people who wear dentures state that simply brushing doesn't do enough to cure their bad breath. Your dentures will include microscopic holes that can serve as hiding places for bacteria, so you may want to take additional steps to cleanse and disinfect them. Make sure that you are soaking your dentures with a dental cleaning solution.

If your efforts to get rid of your bad breath aren't working, contact our office to see if another problem is at play.
